First Things First

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness,
and these things will be given to you as well.”
– Matthew 6:33

One of my favorite parts of the movie, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” is the father’s all-in-one answer to everything – from pimples to psoriasis – Windex. For some time now, I have been bringing a few of my own heart ailments to my Heavenly Father, and while my prayers have regarded any number of different, unrelated things, the same verse keeps coming to mind. God has responded to all of my prayers lately with the same all-in-one answer: “Seek first his kingdom.” Frankly, I have been a bit frustrated by this “Windex-answer-of-a-prayer,” yet obviously, God is trying to get something through to me.

Seek first the King, not a place of service for the King. Seek first the King, not a community of other King-seekers. Seek God. Plain and simple. And let God take care of the rest. Serving in ministry and participating in community are good things after all, but they are the overflow, or byproducts if you will, of a heart devoted to Him alone.

God understands what I need even more than I do, and only God can fill the deepest longings of my soul. Only God can offer the living water that will satisfy all thirst. Of course, I know this is my head, but trusting and believing it in my heart to be true is something else. So God keeps tenderly shaking his head at me. With every prayer that goes up, Matthew 6:33 comes down. I now think of it as my “Windex verse.”

This is a repost from 2009.
