I could hardly sleep.
A tiny box, tied with ribbon, lay under the tree.
Our 16-year-old daughter had no inkling of what awaited her – the kind of surprise every teenager dreams of. A key.
A key to new independence.
A key to new responsibility.
Christmas morning came. She opened the box.
Disbelief turned to shock.
Shock turned to surprise.
Surprise turned to squeals.
Squeals turned to delight.
Hers and ours.
What joy it is to give. To open a box and find a key. A key to open another gift.
It has given me much to consider. As her parents, we spent months preparing for this moment. It was worth it too, just to see the look on her face.
And yet, our heavenly Father spent thousands of years preparing the world for the greatest gift possible.
He gave himself. Wrapped in flesh. To open our hearts to Him.
And He continues to give. For He loves to give good gifts (James 1:17).
Now, a new year awaits, like a gift to be opened.
I can’t wait to open this new year and see what gifts He has in store.
